An error was made on the Science in A Can volunteer opportunity and we are hoping that with the correction, someone will step up to chair this wonderful program. Please see below.

Science in a Can*: (One or two people) A weekly commitment for 6 weeks beginning after Winter Break. The chairs need to collect supplies and photo copy experiments before starting, but that only takes minimal additional time.

Please contact Michelle Marconi michellemarconi@ameritech.net or Melinda Brom thebroms@sbcglobal.net if interested.

The PTA/O is looking for some wonderful volunteers to serve as committee chairs on some available committees. If you are interested or need more information on a specific committee, please contact one of our 1st VP’s. Melinda Brom, thebroms@sbcglobal.net or Michelle Marconi, michellemarconi@ameritech.net. If you’d like to talk to them, their phone numbers are in the school directory.

  1. Birthday Boards*: One or two creative people that want to celebrate the students and staff birthdays by decorating the birthday board outside the school office.
  2. Cultural Arts Coordinators*: One or two people to coordinate the Cultural Arts program. Organize and lead the volunteers that take turns giving monthly presentations about selected artists and pieces of art and supervising a hands-on related art activity. No previous art knowledge needed!
  3. Halloween Windows: Coordinate Central School’s participation in the district Halloween window painting program.
  4. Hike and Bike to School*: Plan and promote a week of awareness and activities promoting walking or riding bikes to school. (Fall Program)
  5. Innisbrook Gifts and Wrapping Paper: Coordinate and organize the promotion of this fundraiser. Fall dates are Sept.12-26, 2008. Collect orders, count money and organize volunteers for product pick up. In spring, you’ll send out a flyer to promote more sales.
  6. PR/Media Coordinator: Are you a good writer? You’ll write press releases and contact the local newspapers to promote PTA/O activities at Central School.
  7. Science in a Can*: (One or two people) A weekly commitment for 10-12 weeks during January through March to check in cans and replenish supplies for the experiments. Usually requires 30-45 minutes/week at school.

Central School is an extra special place because of our volunteers, and in whatever way you do help, it is much appreciated. You’ll receive a detailed informational folder with all important information to make the job easier. We can’t do it without you and unfortunately, the committees marked with a * will be dropped in the 2008/09 school year if we don’t find someone to run the program.

Please save your soda cans for a new experiment!

The Science in a Can Committee needs your help.  The Committee is looking for about 75 empty soda cans for this years science program.  Please save your rinsed soda cans (with or without the pulltab/ring) and bring them to the next PTA meeting on Tuesday, November 6th.  The cans can also be delivered to a box on the porch of Kim Frank’s house (across from the school) or Linda Roberto’s porch (see the Directory for house address).

Thank you in advance for your help.  Linda Roberto and Kim Frank

This is week two of seven for Science in a Can, which is being done by children in grades K, 2, and 4. This program has been revamped over the past year, but it is still a work in progress. There are a number of new experiments in the rotation this year, and there will no doubt need to be adjustments to some of these; we will definitely be taking your experiences into account. However, when you write those comments, please remember that you are directing them to volunteers. Anybody who wishes to join the committee is always welcome. Please help us to make this the best program it can be!

Re: Volunteers Needed to Refill Cans

Science in a Can, as many of you know, is an enrichment program offered to Central School children in kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th grade. It is meant to teach/reinforce the basic steps in the Scientific Method. Each Friday from February 3 through March 24*, your child will bring home a Pringles potato chip can with instructions and materials for performing an age appropriate science experiment. Students are required to complete at least three of these experiments; those who complete four or more will earn a Science Wizard award.

Each experiment sheet gives the child a problem, asks him to come up with an hypothesis, and then gives instructions for conducting the experiment. The child is then asked to record the results and draw a conclusion based on what happened. All your child’s answers go on a worksheet provided in the can. An additional sheet explaining the science behind the experiment - written at an adult level - is also in the can so that you may refresh your memory, if necessary, and offer an explanation to your child, if so desired. All experiments can be “Done in a Day”.

With the exception of basic materials - like water or drinking glasses - the things your child needs to conduct the experiment are provided in the can. That’s were you come in: we need at least two parents from each kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th grade classroom to come to school once a week for seven weeks - usually on a Wednesday or Thursday - to retrieve the box of cans from outside the classroom, refill them and return them to the classroom door. You can come at whatever time is good for you, and your preschooler is welcome to join you! Two people working together should be able to refill the cans in about 1/2 hour.

If you can help, please return the bottom portion of this sheet to school ASAP.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions! Many thanks.
